Obituary

Obituary for Esther McNair

Ess Lee known as Esther, daughter of Irvin Hooks & Hattie Miller was born in Finleyson, Georgia on August 22, 1923.

Esther attended school in Georgia but completed her education in New Jersey. Esther earned her LPN license from North Jersey training program.

Esther was courted by James McNair to whom she married and produced Gloria, Sharyn, and James McNair. They amicably split. Esther later produced Robin and lastly John.

Esther worked for Presto Lock in Garfield New Jersey as an Assembler. Once her LPN license was received she was hired and worked for St. Mary’s Hospital in Passaic NJ for over 15 years until 1986.

Esther received much joy from attending St. Paul Baptist Church in Passaic. She was the founding member of the Nurses Aide Unit at St. Paul Baptist Church. She was also a choir member and until her death she was the oldest member of St. Paul BC to which she received many accolades from the church.

Esther loved caring for the newborns at St. Mary’s hospital. She loved drinking her morning coffee, watching the news and listening to gospel music.

At 97 years old Esther was the last surviving member of the Hooks Legacy (Gertrude, Ervin, Alice, Aaron, Johnny, Frank, Esther, Otis, Alphonso, Hattie & Mattie).

Esther leaves to grieve daughters Sharyn & Gloria McNair, son John McNair, Grandsons Jubba Seyyid & Toshaie McNair, Granddaughter Eshe Green, Great Granddaughter Me’Shaie McNair & Great Great Granddaughter Autumn.

Esther was called home April 7, 2021 she’s preceded in death by sons James H. McNair and Robin I. "Munk" McNair.

“Her life's spirit will shine within all she touched. Blessed be her passing. She will be in all our hearts
and minds forever. “

To Sharyn and Family,
Sis. Ess will be greatly missed. I will miss coming to the house given her communion, sing with her and sharing what the sermon was in church that day. She always had a word of encouragement for us. Mother Ess will always be missed by her St. Paul's family. God needed another Rose for his Garden so he picked you. RIP my dear friend.
